Underwater connectors are critical and complex components of deep-sea engineering equipment. Also referred to as subsea connectors and marine connectors, they are engineered for extreme environments, including vibration, pressure, impact, and corrosive seawater. High-performance technical equipment is essential for the effective exploration and utilization of this vast blue ecosystem in the deep sea. Numerous manned and unmanned underwater vehicles have been developed with technologies requiring underwater connectors, such as remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), manned submersibles, and hybrid ROV/AUV systems.

Many subsea observatories have been constructed, such as the Hawaii Undersea Geological Observatory (HUGO) and the Astronomy with a Neutrino Telescope and Abyss Environmental Research (ANTARES) project. Various marine engineering equipment has also been deployed for oil and gas extraction and offshore renewable energy (ORE) farms.
