How do I maintain underwater connectors to maximize service life?

Proper maintenance of subsea connectors significantly extends service life and prevents in-service failures. Follow these guidelines:

Before Each Deployment

  • Inspect O-rings for cuts, compression set, or surface contamination; replace if in doubt
  • Apply a thin film of approved O-ring lubricant (Parker Super-O-Lube or equivalent silicone grease)
  • Inspect contact pins for corrosion, deformation, or contamination; clean with isopropyl alcohol
  • Verify dummy plugs are fitted to all unused receptacles
  • Confirm locking thread or bayonet coupling is fully engaged

After Each Deployment (Recovery from Seawater)

  • Rinse connector with fresh water within 2 hours of recovery
  • Inspect for biofouling; gently remove with soft brush -- do not use wire brushes on sealing faces
  • Dry thoroughly before storage; store in clean dry environment with dummy plugs installed
  • Record mating cycles in maintenance log; replace O-rings at manufacturer-recommended intervals

O-Ring Replacement Schedule

  • Standard NBR O-rings: Replace every 12 months or 200 mating cycles, whichever comes first
  • Viton O-rings: Replace every 18 months or 300 mating cycles
  • Always replace O-rings after any suspected seal failure event

Replacement O-ring kits are available directly from RV Power Group. Contact [email protected] with your connector part number to order spares.
